Earlier this year Sefton Borough Council gave notice to fell six horse chestnut trees on Chapel Lane, Formby village. At that time protests prevented all but one from being felled. Of the remaining five trees Formby Parish Council agreed to pay for a tree survey to determine their state and assess their need for removal. Most residents agreed to be bound by the results. Following the survey the tree expert commissioned by the Parish Council agreed that one of the trees would die and should be removed, however the other trees could be preserved and revived with the correct treatment regime. The dying tree was felled with out contention. There was a caveat that an additional survey was carried out in May to asses the trees in full leaf. Following this May survey the expert commissioned by Formby Parish Council stood by his original assessment that the remaining four trees which include the two currently to be felled on the 4th of October this year could be saved.
Despite Formby Parish Council's survey carried out by a very well qualified Arboriculturist with an impressive CV which includes work for the Royal Household and the Highways Agency as well as Oxford University, Sefton Council refuse to overturn their decision to remove the two mature horse chestnut trees later this year with the remaining no doubt being axed in a phased removal as was their original plan.
We are urging residents to make their feelings known by writing to Sefton Council and signing our online petition .
